Gibney’s Elon Doc Isn’t Out but Musk Is Already Calling It a ‘Hit Job’

A new documentary about Elon Musk is set to hit theaters this October, and the world’s richest man still isn’t thrilled about it.

“It’s a hit piece,” Musk wrote on X on Thursday. “Gibney is incapable of anything else.”

“MUSK” is the work of Emmy and Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, who’s made a name for himself by chronicling the lives of the rich and powerful. His films include “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” which details the fall of Enron, “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks,” a look into the world of Julian Assange, and “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes.

Musk also noted the film’s length. “4 hours!!” Musk wrote, asking whether Gibney was trying to “bore people to death.”

The film — which will premiere next month at the Venice Film Festival — runs about 232 minutes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s scheduled to hit US theaters on October 16.

“MUSK” was announced in March 2023, prompting a response from the Tesla CEO.

“It’s a hit piece,” he wrote on Twitter at the time.

Gibney shot back. “How would you know,” he wrote, quote-tweeting the billionaire.

This isn’t the first documentary to offer a look at the billionaire. The 2022 BBC series “The Elon Musk Show” also featured interviews with former colleagues, some of whom were critical about Musk’s leadership style.

Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography of Musk also drew some scrutiny, including from Musk’s daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, who criticized its portrayal of her and her relationship with her father.

Representatives for Gibney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
