In 2024, the Met Gala examined fashion through the lenses of nature, time, the senses, and technology.
Iconic gowns rarely seen in public were displayed in the event’s accompanying exhibit. Sensory facets of famous garments — how they move, the sounds they make, and what they smell like, for example — were also highlighted with digital displays.
Attendees were given a dress code called “The Garden of Time,” inspired by a 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard. The piece references a “utopia of leisure, art, and beauty,” flowers made of crystal, and an encroaching dystopia, all of which played a role in the event’s theme.
Some celebrities interpreted that via garments made from disposable materials, like Tyla, who wore a gown crafted from sand.
