It appears Elon Musk and Grimes are getting along again after the former couple sued each other last year, kicking off a contentious legal battle over the three children they share.

The pair shared a brief exchange on Musk’s platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday. Grimes shared a clip from the video game “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty” in which a character she voices performs a song onstage and appears suspended in a holographic spider web.

“Cool concept for an irl performance,” Musk wrote in response.

Grimes replied, “True – could be sick with projection mapping.”

The short but seemingly friendly exchange stood in contrast to claims made by their legal teams in court last year.

Musk and Grimes, who dated on and off for years starting in 2018, filed dueling lawsuits in Texas and California, respectively, over their kids: 3-year-old X Æ A-Xii, also known as baby X, 2-year-old Exa, or Y, and 1-year-old Tau.

Musk sued the musician on September 7, 2023, to “establish the parent-child relationship” with the children. The same day, Grimes shared and quickly deleted a post on X calling for Musk to “let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer.”

On September 29, 2023, Grimes sued Musk, asking for primary physical custody and joint legal custody of their three kids.

In the following months, lawyers for Grimes and Musk argued over which state the custody battle should play out in, a decision that could have major consequences as Texas limits child support payments for three children to $2,760 a month, while California has no cap.

The pair lobbed accusations at one another, with Musk accusing Grimes of moving to California to avoid Texas courts and Grimes arguing the Tesla CEO didn’t even spend much of his time in the Lone Star State. Grimes also accused Musk of using nondisclosure agreements to not allow their children’s nannies to testify on her behalf.

The Texas court records were sealed from public access in December. The state of the case, including if it is still ongoing, is unclear.

Musk, his lawyers, and a representative for Grimes did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider about their recent X exchange.

Neither Musk nor Grimes, or their representatives, have commented publicly on the custody battle.

However, in an X post in December, Grimes alluded to “personal life drama” and said she did “not wanna be properly in public again until it’s over for sanity.”

Meanwhile, the singer went public with her new flame last month, posting Instagram photos of her kissing and posing with a man. People and Page Six identified him as Matteo Milleri, who goes by the moniker DJ Anyma. Grimes captioned a March photo of the two “Beauty and the Beast.”

Milleri is half of Tale of Us, an Italian techno duo. Grimes and Milleri collaborated on “Welcome to the Opera” in June 2023, performing the song at the 2023 Tomorrowland music festival in Belgium.

Both musicians are scheduled to take the stage at Coachella in Indio, California, on the weekends of April 12 and 19.
