Chamath Palihapitiya’s Sweater Meme Captivates Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley has found its joke of the summer and, like the enormous white sweater at the center of it, it just keeps growing.

An image of Chamath Palihapitiya, the founder of venture fund Social Capital, wearing a chunky white turtleneck, has taken over tech circles on X.

The picture, which appears to be a screenshot taken from a January 2023 episode of the “All-In” podcast, got a new lease of life when X users added a glass of wine to Palihapitiya’s hand.

Users then fed the original picture into AI image generators, repeatedly expanding and transforming the sweater to increasingly absurd proportions.

The meme has also become a vehicle for poking fun at Silicon Valley’s fondness for inflated corporate language.

The joke eventually made its way onto the timeline of X’s owner, Elon Musk.

Musk responded to an AI image of Palihapitiya as Edvard Munch’s famous painting “The Scream,” shared by his partner Shivon Zilis, with some sincere fashion commentary.

“I kinda like Chamath’s style tbh,” Musk wrote. “We should update fashion for 2026! The standard suit & tie or T-shirt & jeans is too basic.”

Nathalie Dompé, the CEO of Dompé Holdings and Palihapitiya’s wife, has joined in, too. She shared an iteration of the joke on Wednesday, inserting her husband into Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam.”

Palihapitiya jokingly replied that a “meme has to travel far to reach my wife.”

Palihapitiya then got in on the joke, sharing an image of him and his giant turtleneck superimposed onto the iconic photograph “Lunch atop a Skyscraper.”

At first, the humor was largely about making the already substantial sweater even more substantial. It soon mutated, as internet jokes tend to do, into something stranger.

AI-generated versions turned Palihapitiya’s knitwear into buildings, landscapes, mushrooms, and even a sandworm from “Dune.”

Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive who founded Social Capital in 2011, has long been a recognizable figure in Silicon Valley. He is also one of the four hosts of the “All-In” podcast, which has become highly influential in tech and political circles.

His wardrobe has previously attracted attention online. In June, he was roasted online after declaring that possessions were “worthless” while wearing a plush, off-white hoodie.

Some X users speculated that it was a roughly $2,700 design from Loro Piana, the Italian luxury label that Palihapitiya has praised in the past.

Palihapitiya denied that the hoodie was from the brand. “This isn’t Loro Piana,” he wrote on X. “I’ve moved on.” Business Insider’s Roya Shahidi noted at the time that the two garments appeared to have different necklines.

The internet, however, has not moved on from his knitwear. Happily, Palihapitiya appears to be taking his transformation into a sentient turtleneck in stride.

“As goes the memes, so goes the world,” he wrote on X this week.
