As Someone From the Area, I Love This Florida Destination Near Tampa

Growing up in Tampa, I learned early that getting to my area’s most famous beaches isn’t always as easy as it looks.

Clearwater and St. Pete Beach are undeniably gorgeous, but by mid-morning on a weekend, the parking lots are full, and the sand is packed with umbrellas — and then, the traffic getting home takes hours.

So these days, when I want salt air and sunshine without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, I drive my car to a place that feels like a well-kept secret hiding in plain sight.

Tarpon Springs is a Greek enclave on the Gulf Coast

Known as the “sponge capital of the world,” Tarpon Springs sits about 30 minutes north of Clearwater on Florida’s Gulf Coast, or 20 minutes from my family’s home in northern Tampa.

The beach is special, but so are the layers of history and culture wrapped around it. In the early 1900s, Greek immigrants arrived to work in the sponge-diving industry, and their legacy still shapes the town’s food, architecture, and rhythm today.

Walking around feels less like you’re in Florida, and more like you’re stepping into a little corner of the Mediterranean.

I always start at the sponge docks. The working waterfront is lined with boats, and vendors still sell natural sponges pulled straight from the Gulf. It’s part market, part living museum.

From there, I wander into the Greektown Historic District, filled with delicious food options. This is where I’ve eaten some of the most authentic Greek cooking I’ve found anywhere in the state: flaky spanakopita, thick Greek coffee, and fresh, crunchy Greek salad.

The beaches can feel calm, beautiful, and relatively uncrowded

When I’m ready to jump in some cool water, I head to Fred Howard Park.

This is my favorite part of visiting. The park connects the mainland to a small barrier island, and the water here is calm, clear, and blissfully uncrowded compared to the bigger-name beaches down the coast.

I like to rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the inlet coves, drifting past mangroves and spotting the occasional dolphin or heron in the water. Whenever I’m paddling, it’s easy to forget how close I am to a major metro area.

On the island, I love the scenic, mile-long Fred Howard Causeway, which links the mainland to the beach. You can walk it, bike it, or drive it slowly with the windows down, and the water stretches out on both sides the entire way.

The park is the perfect place to unwind

My family always tries to stay late enough to catch the sunset.

Fred Howard Park is family-friendly and the perfect place to spend some quality time with loved ones.

On the mainland side, kids can play at the two playgrounds or spread out on the open softball and ball field. When I go with my family, we usually claim a shady picnic spot, unpack a spread of food, and settle in for the afternoon. My favorite tradition is staying late enough to watch the sunset.

There’s a stretch where the sky turns orange and pink over the Gulf, the temperature gets a little cooler, and the whole place feels like it belongs to just us.

Tampa’s headline beaches will always draw in crowds, and I understand the appeal. But when I want beauty, history, great food, and room to breathe all in one trip, Tarpon Springs wins every time.
