What we’re watching: Trump talks tough on crime after attack

    🗓️ What we’re watching

    • President-elect Donald Trump used Wednesday’s terrorist attack in New Orleans that left 15 dead as evidence that immigrant criminals are “far worse than the criminals we have in our country.” The attack on Wednesday was carried out by a U.S. citizen from Texas who previously served in the Army. Just after midnight Thursday, Trump blamed the Justice Department, FBI and Democrats for focusing their legal efforts on him instead of crime. “They are incompetent and corrupt, having spent all of their waking hours unlawfully attacking their political opponent, ME, rather than focusing on protecting Americans from the outside and inside violent SCUM that has infiltrated all aspects of our government, and our Nation itself,” Trump wrote, adding that the CIA should be involved.
    • With Trump’s re-inauguration as president less than three weeks away, Chief Justice John Roberts is warning against calls to resist or defy the Supreme Court’s decisions, Josh Gerstein reports.
    • As the incoming Trump administration vows to deport immigrants who are in the country illegally — and even those with temporary protected status — Democratic-led cities are still grappling with how to house asylum seekers, Shia Kapos and Kelly Garrity write.

    👀 What’s Trump up to?

    • Trump celebrated New Year’s Eve at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, along with Vice President-elect JD Vance and tech billionaire Elon Musk.
