Former President Donald Trump took aim at Taylor Swift on Super Bowl Sunday in an apparent attempt to bolster his odds of regaining the presidency in November.
Some Republicans have unleashed their fury on Swift in recent weeks due to the sway she holds over young voters. They’ve accused her of being a Pentagon asset and part of a complex scheme to endorse Biden during the halftime of the Super Bowl, which they say is rigged.
Swift has so far offered no comment on the subject but, of course, Trump couldn’t resist weighing in. In doing so, he risks a fight with a sizable group of voters.
The former president took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday to say it would be a betrayal for Swift to endorse Biden.
“I signed and was responsible for the Music Modernization Act for Taylor Swift and all other Musical Artists. Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will. There’s no way she could endorse Crooked Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt President in the History of our Country, and be disloyal to the man who made her so much money,” Trump said in his post on Sunday.
The Music Modernization Act is a 2018 law that closed loopholes musicians said allowed streaming services to profit unfairly from their work.
A spokesperson for Swift did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on Sunday.
In the previous presidential election, Swift announced her support for Biden just a month before election day in 2020. Months earlier, during the summer’s protests on racial inequality and police brutality, she slammed Trump for “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency.”
Swift is no stranger to using her sway. At 280 million, Swift’s Instagram followers dwarf the followings of both Biden and Trump, who have about 17 million and 24 million on the platform, respectively. When Swift posted an Instagram story in September urging her followers to register to vote, some 35,000 people answered the call.
Young Biden staffers are reportedly hoping Swift will campaign with the president.
As for Trump, he may have just put Swift on her “Vigilante Shit” again.
