    The tallest building in every state, ranked

    • Every state has a highest building, whether it's a modest church or a super-tall skyscraper
    • We ranked the highest buildings in all 50 states.
    • The tallest building is 15 times larger than the smallest.

    While tall buildings are concentrated in the larger cities in the US, every state has its own tallest building.

    We found the tallest building in each state using data from The Skyscraper Center, a database maintained by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

    Here's how every state (and Washington, DC!) stacks up against each other in terms of height.

    51. Wyoming: Wyoming Financial Center, 148 feet

    The Wyoming Financial Center, located in Cheyenne, was sold in 2024 to Laramie County for repurposing as a government building, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

    50. South Dakota: The CenturyLink Tower, 174 feet

    The CenturyLink Tower in Sioux Falls has just 11 floors.

    49. Vermont: Grace Church, 199 feet

    The building is known as the "Superman Building" to locals due to its resemblance to the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Clark Kent works in the comics.

    34. Hawaii: The Central Ala Moana, 435 feet

    The Central Ala Moana, located in Honolulu, is a residential building with 43 floors. It was completed in 2021.

    33. Utah: Astra Tower, 450 feet

    The Astra Tower had its ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2025. The 41-story building is located in downtown Salt Lake City.

    32. Arizona: The Chase Tower, 483 feet

    The 40-story building sold in May 2018 for $79 million. A few months later, it was sold again for $107 million. It was bought by Vincent Viola, the owner of the Florida Panthers.

    Since then, the Phoenix skyscraper has sat empty.

    31. Virginia: The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center, 508 feet

    The hotel underwent a renovation in 2018 and features an 8,332-square-foot ballroom.

    30. Maryland: 100 Light, 529 feet

    Unsurprisingly, the Wells Fargo Center also has 40 floors and "panoramic views of downtown Portland, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and the Willamette River," according to its website.

    24. Missouri: One Kansas City Place, 624 feet

    22. Tennessee: AT&T Building, 632 feet tall.

    Nashville locals know it as the "Batman Building" due to its striking resemblance to Batman's mask with the two spires on either side; however, the design was actually supposed to emulate cellphone antennae.

    20. Louisiana: The Hancock Whitney Center, 697 feet

    According to Republic Plaza's website, the building features 56 floors and offers views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains.

    18. Michigan: Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, 727 feet

    The Fontainebleau opened in 2023. According to Eater, it took 16 years for the construction to be completed. It has 67 floors and 3,644 rooms.

    Stratosphere Tower is technically taller, but according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, freestanding observation towers that are not inhabitable structures are not considered "buildings."

    15. Massachusetts: John Hancock Tower, 790 feet

    Boston's John Hancock Tower, also known as 200 Clarendon, depending on who you ask, is the tallest building in New England, reaching a height of 790 feet.

    14. Minnesota: The IDS Center, 792 feet tall

    The IDS Center has towered over Minneapolis since its completion in 1972, and has 57 floors.

    13. Indiana: The Salesforce Tower, 811 feet

    99 Hudson Street took the crown from the Goldman Sachs Tower (a fellow Jersey City building) when its construction topped off in late 2018, at a height of 900 feet. It opened its doors in 2020.

    8. Washington: The Columbia Center, 943 feet

    The Columbia Center in Seattle is home to the Skyview Observatory on the 73rd floor of the building, making it the highest observatory deck in the Pacific Northwest.

    7. Ohio: Key Tower, 947 feet

    6. Texas: The JPMorgan Chase Tower, 1,002 feet

    While it might technically be called Willis Tower, both Chicago locals and tourists alike can agree that this 110-floor building will always be the Sears Tower in our hearts.
