- Rite Aid is planning to close 77 stores in 2024 as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
- That makes 431 stores that the drugstore chain has decided to close since October.
- Rite Aid has been shrinking its store count for years, losing ground to rivals Walgreens and CVS.
More Rite Aid stores are closing around the US as part of the retailer’s voluntary bankruptcy.
Court filings so far this year have named 77 more stores that the company has put on the chopping block. That adds to locations that the company previously said it would shutter, including about 150 Rite Aid stores that closed last fall.
Since the drugstore chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October, Rite Aid said it would close 431 stores, Masslive.com reported.
“Rite Aid regularly assesses its retail footprint to ensure we are operating efficiently while meeting the needs of our customers, communities, associates and overall business,” a Rite Aid spokesperson said. “In connection with the court-supervised process, we notified the Court of certain underperforming stores we are closing to further reduce rent expense and strengthen overall financial performance.”
Rite Aid has been shrinking its store base over the past decade. The chain had about 4,600 stores in 2013. It sold about 2,000 of those to rival Walgreens in 2017 after federal regulators blocked Rite Aid’s proposed sale to Walgreens.
The company says that it has about 1,700 stores — a fraction of the networks that rivals CVS and Walgreens have built.
