Despite their sorrid pasts, many homes linked to famous crimes return to the real estate market.
Some homes change hands often, while others remain with the same owners long term.
The childhood homes of convicted serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy found new long-term owners.
Believe it or not, it’s not uncommon for people to move into homes that were once crime scenes or owned by notorious criminals.
Some homes with criminal ties have been listed for sale more than once. For example, the Los Angeles condo where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered in 1994 was listed twice after the crime.
Selling these properties, however, isn’t always easy. The South Carolina estate where prosecutors say Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife, Maggie, and their youngest son, Paul, was sold after the crime, but its new owner has since struggled to resell it. In February, the property was delisted after failing to attract a buyer at its $2.2 million asking price.
Some notorious properties, however, have changed hands without the same difficulty. The Los Angeles home where Charles Manson’s followers murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in 1969 sold for $1.875 million in 2021.
Below are other infamous homes that have been listed for sale over the years.

Alex Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of killing his wife and son at the family’s estate. The South Carolina Supreme Court later vacated Murdaugh’s murder convictions and ordered a new trial. Murdaugh maintains he is innocent.
The family’s former estate, known as Moselle, has had a mixed history on the market. Located near the rural town of Islandton, South Carolina, the 48.2-acre hunting property includes a nearly 6,000-square-foot home with four bedrooms and 4½ bathrooms.
The estate last sold at auction in 2024 for $1 million to Alex Blair, a North Carolina businessman, according to Realtor.com. Blair renovated it and relisted it for $2.75 million before lowering the asking price to $2.2 million. It was later taken off the market, where it remains as of September.

In December 1892, Lizzie Borden was arrested on suspicion of murdering her father and stepmother, who were killed with a hatchet in their Fall River, Massachusetts, home.
Nearly 10 months later, following a sensational trial, Borden was acquitted. No one else was charged in connection with the killings, and the case remains unsolved.
Borden never moved back into the home, but it has since become a popular tourist attraction.
In 2004, Donald Woods and Leann Wilbur purchased the home and operated the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum there for more than 15 years. They sold the property to Lance Zaal, founder of US Ghost Adventures, for $1.8 million in 2021. The property continues to operate as a bed-and-breakfast museum, where guests can rent a single room for $249 a night.

In 1969, Charles Manson’s followers murdered actor Sharon Tate and four others at her home in the exclusive Los Angeles Benedict Canyon neighborhood.
The following night, members of the Manson Family murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca at their home, about 10 miles away in the Los Feliz neighborhood.
Over the years, the LaBianca family home has had several owners. In 2019, it was purchased by “Ghost Adventures” host Zak Bagans. He listed the property for $2.2 million in 2021 before reducing the asking price to $2 million. It sold that June for $1.875 million, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The Chicago home that once belonged to mobster Al Capone was put up for sale in February 2019.

Notorious mobster Al Capone and his family moved into this home on Chicago’s South Side in the Park Manor neighborhood in 1923, according to the listing on Zillow.
In a 2019 USA Today article, a real estate agent representing the home said the building, built in 1905, had a secret tunnel of sorts connecting the house to a garage.

Al Capone’s former mansion in Miami Beach’s gated Palm Island community was purchased for $15.5 million in 2021 by Albert Claramonte, cofounder of the Fort Lauderdale luxury wall-covering brand Casamonte.
Capone lived on the 30,000-square-foot property with his immediate family until he died in 1947, according to the FBI.
Despite a petition that received more than 26,000 signatures, the mansion was demolished in 2023. In August, the empty lot was purchased for $21 million, the Miami Herald reported.
Pablo Escobar's Miami Beach property was demolished after being sold.

In the mid-1980s, famed drug lord Pablo Escobar was reportedly earning an estimated $420 million a week. He spent his fortune on many luxury items, including a lavish Miami mansion.
Escobar purchased the 30,000-square-foot Miami Beach property in 1980 for about $762,500 in cash. US marshals seized it in 1987, and it was eventually demolished in 2016, Forbes reported.
Three years later, its lot was put up for sale by ONE Sotheby’s International Realty 2019.
Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood home in Akron, Ohio, has been listed for both sale and rental.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the Akron, Ohio, home was put up for rent in 2016 during the Republican National Convention, which was held in nearby Cleveland. People could have rented it for $8,000 a month.

The Miami Beach mansion owned by Gianni Versace, who was murdered outside the home in 1997, was purchased in 2000 by telecommunication entrepreneur Peter Loftin for $19 million. The property was sold again in 2013 for $41.5 million, CNBC reported.
The 19,000-square-foot Ocean Drive property is now a luxury hotel called The Villa Casa Casuarina. Guests can book suites starting at $599 per night or dine in its restaurant.

The home where Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman were murdered in 1994 was sold two years later for $525,000, the LA Times reported. The condo was sold again in 2006 for $1.72 million.
The murders led to the eight-month-long trial of OJ Simpson. Simpson was acquitted of all criminal charges, though a civil court two years later in 1997 found Simpson liable for wrongful death in the double murder, and he was ordered to pay damages to both victims’ families.
OJ Simpson, who died in 2024, always maintained his innocence, despite publishing a book describing how he hypothetically would have committed the murders.

In 1996, Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents at the family’s Beverly Hills mansion in 1989.
While the brothers have spent decades behind bars, the home has had a few new owners. Most recently, an LLC called LAHA ELM purchased it for $17 million in 2024, Realtor.com reported.
Netflix’s “Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” renewed public interest in both the property and the brothers’ case, drawing curious tourists to the home.
In 2016, the Long Island, New York, home that was the site of the 'Amityville Horror' murders was put up for sale.

In 1974, the town of Amityville, New York, was haunted by a series of murders. Ronald DeFeo Jr. was convicted of murdering his parents and four siblings at a house known as 112 Ocean Ave., according to the History Channel.
In 1975, the DeFeo family home was sold to a man named George Lutz, who moved in with his family. The Lutz family claimed the home was haunted and left after 28 days of living there.
The story inspired a novel and two films called “The Amityville Horror.”
The home where the 1974 murders occurred is now known as 108 Ocean Ave., according to the New York Daily News. In 2016, the supposedly haunted home was listed for sale, and its Zillow listing shows it was purchased in 2017.

The serial killer’s childhood home in Tacoma, Washington, looks unassuming from the outside. It was sold and remodeled in 2017, according to The Tacoma News Tribune.
During the renovation, a contractor said he found several “eerie” things in the home, including a bird carcass, the words “Help me” written on glass, and drawers that appeared to open on their own, the newspaper reported.
