At Jane Street, even picking T-shirts requires top talent.
Jane Street, the secretive trading quant firm, is hiring a “Swag Program Manager,” with a base salary of $150,000 to $200,000, plus an annual bonus, according to a job posting.
The well-compensated swag maestro will support the firm’s recruiting and culture initiatives, the posting says, and contribute to both day-to-day operations and strategy. In the role, they’ll help develop new products “that feel current and true to the brand,” and manage vendor relationships.
Jane Street is, as usual, looking for the best. The ideal candidate is an analytical-creative hybrid, with more than seven years of experience, a proven track record of developing products, and “working knowledge” of production and decoration mechanics, including embroidery and screen printing. They should also be comfortable building models and forecasts based on multiple data sources; the job posting doesn’t specify why, but says the program manager needs to be comfortable “defining success metrics.”
The job posting also hints at Jane Street’s ambitions, since the employee will be responsible for “improving processes as the program scales.” Jane Street, which was founded by a small group of traders in 2000, now employs more than 3,000 people. A representative for Jane Street declined to comment.
Though some on X were surprised by the six-figure pay package for the swag manager position, the salary range is low for Jane Street, where entry-level quant traders can make $300,000 before bonus. In 2025, the average compensation per employee reached $2.7 million, according to Bloomberg.
Swag isn’t new to the firm, or tech and finance companies more broadly. Firms can use merchandise to telegraph their identities or as a recruiting tactic, which is especially important as they vie for the top technical talent to stay competitive in AI. (Jane Street has invested in AI companies and says it has tens of thousands of its own GPUs.)
There’s a niche corner of TikTok focused on “Jane Street unboxing,” full of t-shirts with hidden math problems. One video shows a merch box packed with a tote bag, shirt, pack of cards, Owala water bottle, and notebook, all branded with the firm’s concentric-circle logo.
Jane Street doesn’t sell its merchandise, but there’s an online resale market for those of us who couldn’t get through the notoriously difficult recruiting process. Graphic t-shirts can be listed for around $80, and a graph paper notebook is priced at $64.99.
A “Navigate the Gradient ML Puzzle,” referring to machine learning, is listed at $99.99, a seemingly realistic price. As of Monday morning, it was in someone’s cart.
