Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) announced on Wednesday that Uber Eats customers in the Arizona cities of Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler can now choose to have their orders delivered by Waymo autonomous vehicles. The launch is part of the broader multi-year collaboration between Uber Technologies (UBER) and Waymo that was announced last year.
The test run in the Phoenix region will see Uber Eats customers have the option when ordering to take delivery via autonomous vehicles or a courier. The orders delivered by autonomous vehicles will arrive via Waymo’s Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles. Some of the select local merchants in the Uber Eats program include regional favorites like Princess Pita, Filiberto’s, and BoSa Donuts.
The addition of food delivery to Uber’s (UBER) ongoing partnership with Waymo was highlighted to reflect both companies’ mission to encourage zero-emission trips and unlock greater innovation for consumers and merchants in Phoenix and beyond. For its part, Uber Eats has already teamed up with robotics companies Cartken, Motional, Nuro, and Serve Robotics to pilot autonomous deliveries in other markets.
Alphabet’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Waymo has been developing self-driving technology since 2009. Waymo has partnerships with multiple vehicle manufacturers, including Stellantis (STLA), Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTCPK:MBGAF), Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Cars (OTCPK:VOLAF) (OTCPK:VLVLY).
