Gas stoves can keep high-powered burners, oversize cast-iron grates and other features under new energy efficiency standards completed Monday by the U.S. Department of Energy, which it said will reduce household utility costs while improving appliance reliability and performance.
The DoE said the final rules, which reflect an agreement between environmental and consumer groups with appliance companies such as Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR), mean 97% of today’s gas stoves already meet the new efficiency standards, although 23% of smooth top electric stoves fall short.
Compliance will be required by newly manufactured models, including imports, beginning January 31, 2028.

A public outcry ensued last year after a commissioner with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in an interview that gas stoves were a health hazard, although the CPSC’s chairman later disavowed the comments.
Nevertheless, some municipalities including New York and Los Angeles have passed restrictions on using natural gas in newly built homes.
The American Gas Association has said research linking gas stoves and the increased risk of conditions such as asthma is faulty.
