Donald Trump crypto empire faces fresh pressure as Republicans lose control of Congress in the 2026 midterms, handing Democrats a sweeping victory. The political setback comes as Trump-linked tokens remain deeply underwater and Justin Sun escalates his legal fight against World Liberty Financial, the WLFI.

Sun is seeking nearly $264,000 in sanctions over alleged failures to disclose the project’s UAE ownership ties, and the midterm defeat gives Democrats greater power to investigate Trump’s administration and scrutinize potential conflicts of interest involving his family’s business interests.

Meanwhile, the market has delivered its own verdict. Official Trump, Melania Meme and WLFI tokens have fallen sharply from their peaks, leaving investors nursing substantial losses.

Justin Sun Seeks WLFI Sanctions Over UAE Ownership Disclosure

The latest legal pressure comes from Justin Sun, who invested $45 million in WLFI tokens before his relationship with the Trump-backed crypto project deteriorated.

Sun sued World Liberty Financial in April, accusing the company of fraud and unlawfully freezing his tokens. The project later countersued, describing his claims as a “meritless PR stunt.”

Now, the Justin Sun dispute has escalated into a fight over WLFI’s corporate ownership disclosures. Sun alleges World Liberty initially identified Florida as its sole citizenship in federal court. Months later, the company amended its filing to identify 22 entities in its ownership chain, claiming citizenship across Florida, Delaware, Puerto Rico, and the United Arab Emirates.

The amended disclosure came shortly after an August hearing addressing World Liberty’s attempt to move parts of the dispute into arbitration. Sun argues the company should have disclosed its ownership structure earlier, before his legal team spent months challenging arbitration. He claims the late disclosure could undermine the federal court’s jurisdiction.

The WLFI Sanctions motion seeks nearly $264,000 in legal fees and costs from the company and its attorneys. World Liberty’s lawyers reportedly said they learned about the UAE citizenship after the original filing. The court has not determined whether the company intentionally concealed its ownership ties.

Sun plans to refile his lawsuit in California state court once the sanctions motion is resolved. Nevertheless, this controversy adds another complication for Trump Crypto ventures, whose foreign investment connections have already attracted political scrutiny.

Trump Crypto Tokens Slide as Political Hype Fades

The legal dispute arrives as Trump-linked digital assets remain far below their launch-era highs. The official Trump crypto token reached $73.43 in January 2025 before falling to around $1.50. That leaves TRUMP down 98% from its peak.

Melania Meme, the first lady of America-tied meme coin, has suffered an even steeper decline. The token previously reached approximately $13.05 but has since traded near seven cents, representing a loss exceeding 99%.

WLFI has also retreated from its all-time high near $0.33 to roughly five cents. Its fully diluted valuation remains substantial, but its market price reflects a sharp reversal from launch expectations.

The downturn has left Trump crypto investors facing losses while the project’s political and legal connections draw renewed attention.

World Liberty also operates USD1, its dollar-pegged stablecoin, which has grown into a major part of the project’s business. The company’s financial and ownership structure could receive greater scrutiny as Democrats prepare to take control of Congress.

The midterm results have not triggered investigations into Trump crypto ventures, but Democrats will gain subpoena power and greater influence over congressional oversight once the new Congress convenes.

The Trump crypto story is no longer just about political branding and token launches. It is increasingly about investor losses, corporate transparency, and the legal consequences of operating a business tied to the presidency.
