- Alphabet’s Google (NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL) plans to destroy hordes of data related to millions of users’ web-browsing histories while in Incognito mode, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
- The data purge is part of the settlement in a class-action lawsuit that alleged the tech giant had misled consumers about their privacy protections when using the private Incognito mode of its Chrome web browser.
- Google also plans to update its disclosures involving data collection for users in Incognito mode and allow the disabling of third-party cookies.
- The lawsuit, from 2020, covered millions of Google users since June 1, 2016, for alleged violations of federal wire-tapping and California privacy laws.
- A preliminary settlement of the suit was reached in late December 2023. The details were not made public.
- Google was up more than 2% during trading late Monday morning.
